How to Choose A Yoga Studio

1. Feel Out Different Studios

  • Before committing to a studio, I recommend finding a place that offers an introductory class or a new member discounted class. There are a lot of variety when it comes to yoga studio, so its best to get a feel for your options. 

2. Start with a beginner class

  • Maybe you’ve dabbled in yoga at home and practiced with videos that taught you all the basic poses. Should you still be going to beginner’s classes? In my opinion, yes.

    Just because you have some experience with yoga doesn’t mean you have experience attending a yoga class. Also, keep in mind that the atmosphere of a group class can make you push yourself harder than you would at home, and being too sore to move the day after a grueling intermediate class can hurt your likelihood of sticking with the practice in the long run

3. New Student Promotions

  • My one advice is to never join a yoga studio before asking for new student promotions! . Almost every yoga studio has one, in varying degrees of value. Some offer the first class for free. Others offer an entire month of unlimited yoga (you can drop in on any of their classes, as many times as you want) When I first tried out yoga while a student at Michigan State, the studio offered two weeks unlimited yoga for twenty dollars. Even after when I moved back to Chicago I found CorePower Yoga to be another great place that offers first week free. (also with student discount and other memberships!) They are in almost 23 states!

  •  Check websites like Groupon for deals offered at studios in your city. These deals are perfect for beginner students, as they will help you to build on your foundation for basic yoga poses.
