~All Is Well~

Bali, Indonesia

Jackie Winkler

Yes you read the title correctly, I took a trip to not only Bali...but I did so through a Groupon. If one is not familiar with this resource, its where one can score deals and coupons from restaurants, spas, things to do, fitness, goods and even travel experiences.

I've always had the travel bug. Even as a young kid, I itched for new places to one day visit. I was able to accomplish this goal early on in my college career getting the opportunity to travel abroad for a summer through an International Food Laws program with 20 class members from Michigan State University. As I traveled through the mountains of the Swiss Alps, ate home made pasta made from the locals and sat underneath the Eiffel Tower with a bottle of cheap wine, I knew that through learning about these different cultures my experiences traveling had only begun.

It wasn't until a year later, that a friend (who I met through study abroad) and I, decided that since we were young, broke and had no strings attached yet- that this was the perfect time to travel somewhere great together. In the summer before my Senior year in college, we came across a group on advertisement- "11-Day Island Vacation in Indonesia." We booked our trip a week later.

It was a risky move- we had no idea what Indonesia held for two girls. The description on the Groupon website read, "Sun-kissed beaches and lively party scenes have put Bali and Gili Trawangan among the top island destinations in Indonesia and all of Asia. You’ll split your time between between the two and spend your time on your own doing activities such as scuba-diving or shopping in night markets. Select one of this deal’s upgrade options and you’ll enjoy a seafood dinner, as well as a tour of volcanoes and temples. This is a great value vacation!"

It was all true though! We did it all! The only negative of our travels was the almost 24 hours trip to GET to Bali. With having a layover in Moscow, Russia to almost having a panic attack during an extremely bump airplane moment over Singapore- it exceeded our expectations immensely.

To sum it up what did we get for paying $2,000 through Group on!?

I learned that sometimes taking a risk like this can be worth it. The wonderful people I met in Bali made my travels worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat, just remember to always read the fine print before booking a trip through a coupon and deal site....haha..
